The Spec Sheet: The Rolex Submariner That Bridges The Gap Between Vintage and Modern

The Rolex Submariner reference 16610 is the bridge between two eras of Rolex. Introduced in 1987, it’s part vintage, part modern. One of the Crown’s first “five-digit” references – that is, models with five-digit reference numbers instead of the four it used throughout its vintage years – this Submariner is the brand’s first effort to take the classic dive watch and turn it into an item of luxury. 

And man, is it successful. The cyclops date at three o’clock, the Mercedes hands, the uni-directional diving bezel – all the immediately recognizable hallmarks that make the Submariner the Submariner are here. And while the case design was updated, it’s still a classic, wearable size at 40mm in diameter and 13mm in thickness. Rolex upped the water resistance to 300 meters (from 200m) and added a sapphire crystal, making for a more modern, durable dive watch. It also makes the Submariner more luxurious. 

Altogether, the reference 16610 is perfect for those who want a little bit of everything: a little vintage, a little modern – but still all Submariner.
